After completing an express test we were able to spot a substantial lag on one of the 4 heads. Selective imaging is something that we use for data recovery process on similar cases. With help of tools such as Data Extractor as part of the PC3000 Express this situation can be resolved very efficiently, and provide solid results even on hard drives that do not get recognized by the computer or BIOS. This specific unit had developed some heavy bad sectors at the beginning of the drive, which had effect on accessibility of the file system. Instead of the complete sector-by-sector copy we opted for selective imaging process. This was a windows based hard drive, and even though computer wont boot with it, we were able to extract and MFT file out of it. MFT file has a similar role to the hard drive as indexing pages at the beginning of the book. It indicates where specific data is located on the hard drive. By imaging that small section belonging to MFT first, we were able to build a virtual partition that was simulating original structure of the drive’s content. Since our client only was interested in the data inside of the user profile, we concentrated on obtaining only that. It turned out that past some point on the surface of head 2 image process was stable, and we were able to obtain a 99.98% recovery. Only 8 files were affected by bad sectors. This problem is not only common for Samsung drives, but also every other brand out there like WD, Seagate, Toshiba, HGST and others.
