Buy it on Amazon - http://lon.tv/zgsl0 (affiliate link) Many viewers have asked if it's possible to connect a WD My Cloud directly to a computer using an ethernet network cable. The answer is yes. On Windows and other operating systems you'll need to set static IPs on both the computer and the WD My Cloud (some computers may also need a special cross over cable). Macs are a little easier in that the Mac will assign itself an address to talk to the My Cloud. This set up is ideal if you are mainly going to access the My Cloud over a wireless network and your main computer is far away from your router or access point. This will let you load in data much faster initially, and once the transfer is done you can relocate the My Cloud to your router or wireless access point. It won't provide any speed benefit for those already connecting to the My Cloud via ethernet. 1. I have the WD 4tb cloud (not my cloud) - would it be the same procedure for a Mac?
  2. My router is not working, so how can I connect my mycloud to the PC itself for the meantime? Is there a USB connecting device??? Thanks for any help...
  3. Can you possible do a video where you actually show step by step how to use the mycloud mirro as an external harddrive, connecting it to a computer running windows 10.
I have been on the phone to WD customer support trying to get them to talk me through it. However they are unable to figure it out themselves.
  4. How about changing router and the configuration of wdmycloud is from old router like 192.168.1.1, new router is 192.168.0.1 that's the gateway. Just having problem on that and i don't want to messed up.
  5. Hi there, I am not IT savvy so please excuse me for the question. I have problems with Mycloud and Mac. The connection keeps dropping. I wonder if it's because the wifi IP address changes alot. I am not sure what you mean by not internet not being routable. How do I make it non routable? and do you think the my cloud connection keeps dropping because of the change in network IP address?
  6. My question has to do with 2 Windows 10 PC's. I want to use a physical crossover Ethernet cable to make them talk to each other. In other words, I want to be able to move files both ways between the two. All the info I have found thus far is either for earlier versions of Windows, like 7, 8, and 8.1, or saying the this cannot be done with Windows 10. Surely this cannot be right?

Both of my PC's are Windows 10. I would think this would ensure they are compatible with each other as far as their OS is concerned. So if you would please tell me how to do this, I would be most grateful.
  7. Hi Lon, need your help plz..my Wd my cloud 2TB giving me a red led light and i can not access it any more..i have done a reset to the device but it is useless..i would like to send it to the maintainance but i do have a lot of personal stuff loaded into it and i don't know how to save it into another drive or even delete it !!?
  8. Thank you so much! Before now all my devices have been jam-packed with data but I've just bought a 3TB My Cloud. I've been trying to move all the data over to the NAS over Wi-Fi which was pretty slow, then moved my (old) MacBook (which has an ethernet port) to the router, and connected it which sped things up a bit. Not sure if the router is Gigabit or not—I guess not because I have now connected the MacBook and My Cloud together directly and things are moving a lot speedier now. Thanks again!
  9. And how do you connect the WD drive to the MAC via the LAN?
  10. Is it possible to connect the cloud to the internet via a computer/laptop without having to connecting it directly to the router? My router is outside the house and I would need to have 100 meters cable for that. Thanks
  11. Dear Lon, sorry to bother you. I've got an issue related to the WD My Cloud 3TB as since few days cannot be accessed anymore, I'm stucked with White Led either fixed or flashing...no way to get blue led color back...i've attempted the device resets as reported into the WD community or other forums but no solutions so far...I've then seen your post here as I wanted to attempt a direct connection of the WD My Cloud to my Mac or PC through an ethernet cable..trying to access data and make a security backup of all data....bear in mind that I cannot even access the dashboard..so really lost...as I'm not sure how to retrieve the proper IP address from the disk able to communicate with my Macbookpro...tried to contact WD support but not answers yet...if you got any suggestions I would appreciate. Thanks a lot Marco

  17. Lon, I have plugged my MyCloud into my Mac and the Mac does not "see the drive automatically. I even have it connected via USB and Ethernet but still no go. Can you help me with this?
  18. This video goes much too fast to help anyone with novice computer skills. You can already see by reading the comments that some people have messed up their computers by taking Lon's advice.

  20. Hi, just wondering why should I do it via the WD my cloud and not via the router and reserve a static IP via the router.
