One way to recover data from a WD 1TB External portable USB3-integrated hard drive suffering from a possible firmware fault that is causing the drive to persistently run down the data transfer rate from full speed off to as low as 64KB/sec after a couple of hundred MB of data transfer. Tools used: * ddrescue 1.22-pre5 ( http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/ddrescue/ ) * waitfordevice ( https://github.com/inflex/waitfordevice ) * USB controlled relay switch based on the OBDev/V-USB Atmel switch ( https://www.obdev.at/products/vusb/powerswitch.html )

  2. With the propensity for these back-up drives to fail (doesn't matter whether it is WD or Seagate) there should be an easy way for Joe ComputerOwner to retrieve info/data from a failed back-up drive.
  3. Very neat approach! It would be nice if you could only reset the controller, leaving the platters spinning. Should be a lot faster, without the waiting for the spin-down and spin-up. If it were my drive I would just flash the firmware ;)
  4. This is awesome.
  5. seems to be a pattern.. it starts to drop around 30 sec...
