  4. Back in the DOS days formatting changed the physical format of the disk and hence "format". Physical features would be sector/track count. You'd normally have to use the formatting tool in the BIOS, then format it in DOS. Yes, it also changed the format of the allocation table (e.g. FAT), but there are ways to do that without formatting at all (e.g. gparted). These days (since ~2000) HDDs come pre-formatted, so the physical format feature isn't used much (if at all, if it even works and isn't relevant to SSDs for obvious reasons). Clearing the disk was more like a side effect that became the primary purpose as the technology in HDDs improved, and the rest of the features became irrelevant.

  9. The last win. OS that did formatting was XP.(as far as i know).
    As you said it only erase file location table. No formatting...
    Reason?
    The drives become to big, it takes couple of days to format.

  10. Quick formatting does not remove old data. Doing a regular format does erase all the old data, that's why it takes so long. Using something like Boot and Nuke to erase a drive is overkill. It wastes time and energy and causes unnecessary wear on a drive.

    Also wiping an SSD is am entirely different beast and requires entirely different techniques.

  20. Formats for movie cameras, why is there not an industry standard? example; Canon Powershot SD780 IS uses MOV . Which sux, camera is nice but format blows.
