SALE TODAY: Learn Piano on iOS http://bit.ly/PianoAppSale In this video, Mahalo technology expert Justin Zagri demonstrates how to erase a hard drive in Snow Leopard.  Erase Hard Drive --------------------------------------------------------------------- You can completely erase a hard drive or external hard drive by deleting its files and writing over them. 1. In your Applications folder, go to Utilities -- Disk Utility. 2.  In the left sidebar of the Disk Utility window, select the hard drive you want to erase. 3. In the top options bar, select Erase. 4. Under Format, select the format you want to use. Generally, the best option is Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled). 5. You can start with Erase Free Space. This will write over the unused space on your hard drive to prevent the recovery of deleted files. It will open a window with options to select from:  * Zero Out Deleted Files: this is the fastest option to delete and overwrite. * 7-Pass Erase: this will delete and overwrite unused space seven times. * 35-Pass Erase: this will delete and overwrite unused space 35 times.  6. You can select Security Options for more choices in erasing the entire hard drive:  * Don't Erase Data: this option deletes the information so that you can't access it, but the files remain.  * Zero Out Data: this will delete the data but it will still be recoverable.  * 7-Pass Erase: this will delete the data seven times.  * 35-Pass Erase: this will delete the data 35 times.  7. Click Erase on the main window. After you confirm, it will erase the hard drive.  Read more by visiting our page at: http://www.mahalo.com/erase-hard-drive-in-mac-os-snow-leopard/

  1. Using Yosemite here, and while using disk utility after installing my 250GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD, I cloned the two hard drives, and now I'd like to delete the contents of the original Mac Hard drive.   Going through the process you where showing here, if/when you click 'Erase', I get a message/Warning (in Red print) Files on this partition will be encrypted using this password.  If you forget the password, your data will be lost!
It then goes on asking for a 'new' password, then to 'verify' the password.    Is this correct, or am I choosing the wrong selection?   Everything is running fine from the SSD now, so I just need a safe way to clean off the original HD, and use it for additional storage.   Thanks.
  2. What if I wanna erase my mac hard drive, not a external hard drive? same?

  5. Could you erase the hard drive by doing the same thing?
  6. I'm doing a 7 pass from a restore disk on 2 emacs with sensitive info, before selling them.I started one yesterday at 3pm in 30 hrs it isn't even a 3rd completed ? I estimate @ this rate 4-5 days for one,is this right ? If I knew I would have started the process a long time ago.
  7. DO NOT FUCKING DO "CASE-SENSITIVE" This SHIT will ruin your fucking day. As you may know from my use of uppercase letters i am really mad. I had just erased everything and did (Case-sensitive, journaled) and now almost every program i try to install says "For this program to run you need a volume that is not case-sensitive. please choose a case-insensive volume. This happened when i fx installed steam. A brief warning. Choose the top one with just (Journaled) That will save your flipping day ;).
