Every Windows Laptop from HP and Compaq comes with a handy recovery application called HP Recovery Manager which can be activated by simply pressing the F11* key immediately after turning the notebook on. Its a nice utility by which owners can restore their notebook to an earlier working state using Windows System Restore or reformat the laptop to its default factory settings without the hassle of re-downloading and re-installing device drivers. However, there are instances where the HP Recovery Manager fails to load even after pressing the F11* key as I recently experienced with a friends HP Pavilion Notebook. After several hours of troubleshooting the problem, I found a work-around. Complete guide is posted at http://www.lylesantos.com/2009/01/tech-review/hp-recovery-manager/ * some HP/Compaq laptops may have a different key assignment for the HP Recovery Manager

  1. Thanks bro, worked perfectly. I've got an HP Mini 311 and installed my personal copy of Win7 but didn't function the way I wanted so after trying F11 about a hundred times, I gave up and was ready to wipe the entire drive for a new OS install then I came across your post. Thank goodness, I knew the recovery partition was there but just couldn't access it.

  9. hate to rain on your parade, so they say.  but you are really wrong, oh ya the recovery manager is there, like a non funcional personification of a intelluall void that HP put the re for some programers screwup
  10. I did this, and now I keep getting a BOOTMGR problem. My computer won't even startup now.
  11. If you get stuck in Recovery Manager, go to the middle column, first option, and on the bottom it should say open Command prompt.
when CMD opens, type in "diskpart" then "list volume" then "select volume #" (# should be your "system"), once selected type "active". now close out and reboot and it should work.
  12. I have a brand new HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC and running Windows 8.1.  However, I cannot get past step 5 of the recovery disc part that's called Verify Disc.  Keeps asking me to put in another disc to do the same thing.  I need 6 disc all total, and running out of my new disc fast because it will not allow me to get past this point.
