This procedure shows how to reintroduce a drive to repair the array. This sequence used a previously used drive, into a system with PERC. This is a reference video on a Dell T610 with PERC6i It is useful after removing a drive for a backup [whilst shutdown]. Prior to power up one disk has been removed from the PC *** Run Config Utility Catch the boot sequence, and Run Configuration Utilty for PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller When rebooting PERC reported: 1 Drive Degraded, because the configuration used here was for two drives RAID1 and so far only one is installed. But this can be ignored and the Server will try to boot on the installed disk. *** PERC Inspect Status PERC Introduction *Use Ctrl-P and Ctrl-N to move across the tabs *When selecting options, the active highlight is dark blue *** PERC Virtual Disk Management *Raid 1: One disk is removed and this is reported to be Degraded *Open up the Physical Disks *Counts, only 1 Physical Disks *Can see one online and one missing Now you can insert the disk to be rotated in, it is vital to use good labelling and logging of drives in use. *** Insert Replacement Disk PERC Physical Disk Management *A Foreign View should now appear *Use LED Blinking to verify that the listed disk is the one just inserted. *** Clear Foreign View PERC Foreign Config View *Clear the foreign View *Confirm *** Rebuild Disk PERC Virtual Disk Management *Still shows degraded, but... PERC Physical Disk Management *Shows ready *Highlight the disk's line *F2 operations *Global Hotswap *Question: Give priority to enclosure? No [highlight is dark blue] *The disk state changes to Rebuild PERC Virtual Disk Management *Open up the Physical Disks *Counts, now have 2 Physical Disks *Can see one online and one Rebuild *** Reboot IMPORTANT do not power off during the rebuild However you can exit PERC, and bootup the rebuild will continue *Use 'Esc' to exit *OK to confirm exit *Followed by the usual process to reboot *** Disk LED status *Two LEDS each: status and activity, the rebuilding status LED will be blinking. Both activity LEDS will be flashing rapidly *** Summary The Server will try to boot, as in this linked video. 1. Would this same procedure be applicable on a Dell Precision T7400 running RAID 1 (w/ Seagate SAS drives)? And, would you "hot swap" (insert the new drive with the computer running)?
  2. don't get what you did here....was the seagate the missing drive? why would you raid a seagate and an hitachi together...why not a seagate and a seagate? why would you make the seagate a hs? Where did the rebuild part come in....did you leave that out? Maybe next time you can add some audio.
  3. I have the same problem with a Dell 2950 and this titorial works perfect, thanks dude ..
  4. Great HOW to video for the Dell PERC6i.  I'm used to Compaq/HP array controllers and would have never thought to remove a 'foreign config' and then assign the new drive as a hot spare.  I am used to just replacing the failed drive and the array rebuild starting on it's own.  I have to replace a failed drive in clients Dell T105 server tomorrow and while performing my due diligence I came across this video and it was Johnny on the spot.  This from an old man who started working with IBM PC in 1982 at a place called QuadRAM in Norcross GA.  So 32 years in and I'm still learning everyday.  Thanks for your help doctorBob!
