In this video I'm going to show you how to setup a dedicated home file server using Ubuntu Linux and Samba. This server will allow the whole family to store and share files and access them from Windows, Mac, or Linux computers. I'm going to show you start to finish how to setup the server as well as how to access files from it. Hope this helps you out. If it does, give me a thumbs up which helps me out. Thank you for watching.

  1. thanks . very useful . I have rented a server from www.datasoft.ws
  2. You are the best !!!! Thank you very much!!!!
  3. Very useful! At first I was confused but after a second time watching, it became more clear!
    I don't really need this for now but I will surely need it in the future, so this was really informative!
    Thanks!
  4. I don't quite understand something. I created a user in the ubuntu server and samaba. I then gave that user access to the folders in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file. When I go to my windows PC, I type in the username and password that I setup in ubuntu server. It will not let me connect.
    Do I have to have a username on my windows PC that matches the credentials on the ubuntu/samba machine?
  5. Very Informative Tutorial. Thanks
  6. Well Done ans simple to follow up!
  7. Nice video. I have created 3 shares on my Linux server.

    [PLex Media ]
    comment = Plex media
    path = /plex
    browseable = yes
    read only = no
    guest ok = yes

    This was the first share I made and it was working fine. I could add files to it and delete them. Then I added two more shares and created a smb password for user scott

    [Scott's Files]
    comment = Scott's files
    path = /files/scott
    browseable = yes
    read only = no

    [Public Files]
    path = /public/files
    browseable = yes
    read only = no

    When I try to access these new ones it prompts for password and works but now when I access the Plex folder I only have read permissions. I can't copy or delete anything. Does the guest account get blocked when you create a samba user?
  8. When I try to install the latest ubuntu server version it only goes a little ways into the setup and stops. Not sure why this is happening.
  9. Gee, that's much easier than with webmin! :)
  10. Frank, Thank you for this amazing video. I have been scouring around the internet for how to make a file server to about 1 month, and had no success. But when you came along, I finally found out how to make one correctly and make it work. Thank you once again, and have a great day.
  11. What happens when you create a new folder? do you have to go back to the server and set up the permissions again?
    and is there a way to access the server using PUTTY?
  12. Why dose this need to be 64bit? I have an Eee 202 box, with 2 tb drive, 270 atom, with windows, would like to change to Linux, can you tell me 64 bit / 32 bit?
