Hi My name is Roger Ahuja and I'm going to take a few minutes to talk about the backup program in Windows 8. There are actually 2 different backup programs in Windows 8. The first one is the same as Windows 7. In Windows 7 it was called Backup and Restore. In WIndows 8 it's called Windows 7 File Recovery. This program functions the same way Backup and Restore functioned in Windows 7. And we're going to start by looking at that. We'll start by hitting the Windows key on my keyboard getting the start menu and we'll do a search for Windows 7 File Recovery and under settings here, there it is. Now the first time that you go in here you're going to see something that says setup backup. I've already done this so that's why we're coming to this screen. I'm going to go ahead & change settings which will take us to the same screen you would be seeing once you hit setup backup. So, here we're going to setup the backup. I'm going to select which drive I want to backup to. Then I"m going to hit next and I"m going to let Windows choose. What this will do is it will backup everything on your computer. Your programs, your data files, everything on your computer. It creates an image which you can use to restore and it can put the computer back to the state that it was in when the backup was made. So I'll hit next here and then the schedule I like to change it. Windows 7 defaulted to weekly. I like to do it on a daily basis. And so I"m going to select that and at this point I would select save settings and exit and we would start an immediate backup. As I said, I like this particular version in that it backs up everything. The disadvantage was obviously that it's going to backup at 7:00 p.m. and if you've been working all day on something and your hard drive happens to crash at 6:00 pm before the backup, you're going to lose whatever you were working on. So, to that effect, Microsoft came out with their File History program which is the other backup program. So, I'm going to cancel out of here and w're going to close this and go back to our start menu and go to File History and right here is File History. Now File History, all you have to do is select where it's going to backup to and hit Turn on. And it will basically make a backup of your data files. It's going to backup anything that's in a library and it's going to back it up on the fly. It's very similar to Time Machine if any of you are familiar with the Apple product. It will backup on the fly as it's going along, so you could be working all day. You won't lose any data. It's great in that respect. I feel it's lacking in that it doesnt create an image of the system as well. I think it would behoove Microsoft to change this so that it creates an image of the system and backs up on the fly. And that's basically it, those are the 2 different backup programs.

  2. How do i know when i am done backup-ing?
  3. I've been using File History to back up my documents on 8.1 Windows using Western Digital My Book as my external drive. I have used 104 GB with 491 GB of free space still available, using FAT32 file system. Just recently I received the following error message during backup: "Select a different File History drive. File History can't save copies of all your files because of limitations with your File History drives file system. We recommend you select a different drive." I cannot figure out how to be able to use the 80% of remaining space on my WD My Book.
  4. Hi Roger. Just watched your video, great detail and straight forward. I problem I have is that this program does not seem to exist on my PC running 8.1. I called MS support and they too dont seem to know what this is. Is this program not available in some country's do you know? I am in Singapore. Thanks.
  5. On my computer that runs Windows 8 (Not 8.1), I go to control panel, system and security, select the 2nd option below it, and then I can back up there. Is there a difference?
  6. hii... When I purschad my laptop i made  some back up on DVD. I want to know that if i format my laptop after that i get my windows back from that dvd backup which ii stored in 5 dvds.....PLease reply soon.
  7. +Shash Yo If you use Windows 7 File Recovery, that will create an image of your computer.  Use that and you should have a complete backup.
  8. +Roger Ahuja Hi!
I have never created a backup of my system before (a windows 8.1 laptop), an I have 10GB worth of work and 40.8 GB worth of pictures on here. I have scheduled my computer to upgrade to Windows 10, but I want to create a quick back up of all the files, if the system crashes during the update.
How do you create such a back up and if I wanted to restore all this information how do I do this?
Thanks, (I am open to responses from others also)
  9. and by the way, thanks for your response!
  10. my problem is that i need to back up another external drive as well; i don't see how to do that in windows 8?
  11. Roger- when i type in window 7 file recovery i get nothing; there are no icons underneath for settings, the screen is blank....??
  12. +Waz Q - I've never tried restoring files from a Windows 8 backup onto a Windows 7 machine.  Personally I would just copy the files you want to an external hard drive and then copy them back after you reinstall Windows 7.  You may want to consider upgrading to Windows 8.1.1 before you downgrade to Windows 7.  They've made it look much more like Windows 7 and with Windows 10 coming out in the next few months it looks even more like Windows 7....
  13. I wanted to degrade form windows 8 to windows 7...i wanted to backup my files so that i dont have to install them in the future....so..after what i have followed from ur video, will have my files after a clean installation of windows 7?
  14. Hi, when searching for windows 7 file recovery I get no search results? Any idea why? :)

  16. Can I do this and change the motherboard and just go back to that backup?
