How to unlock a Verizon 2nd-gen Moto E phone

I've put together some instructions on how to unlock a 2nd generation Moto E phone that is locked to the Verizon network. I am referencing all the source materials I found that allowed me to create this set of instructions. I'm not an expert on unlocking phones, but thought this would be useful to others. This paragraph on unlocked phones used to be on Verizon's homepage: "We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Edge installment sales agreement. We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.   2. Anderson, thank you for your detailed expert guidance. It worked for my Verizon Moto e (Android 5.1) on the first try. If I may nitpick, you might want to specify the following: 1. One has to logon to PC as the Administrator; 2. Close most other software on PC since the Android Studio installation demands substantial PC resources; and 3. one needs to be patient since it took me ~ 3 hours to download and extract over 1,000 files as a part of AS install.   5. I purchased two Verizon Moto e prepaid phones in a box on Black Friday. Activated one without problem on Straight Talk. The second one could not be activated on Straight Talk.  Because so many people had bought them, they carrier locked all the un-activated IMEI numbers, by the middle of January, so they can't be activated on other carriers.  Does this unlock work for that? Thanks.

  11. You are amazing dude. Thank you so much for putting this together. A couple things to note for anyone having trouble. Java JDK must be installed to use SDK manager. Otherwise it crashes on launch. Before typing "adb shell", USB debugging needs confirmation on the actual phone. That should get rid of the vendor keys error.

  16. this actually worked for me, thanks! the first time i tried it, it failed but that was because somehow i ended up typing "Preffered" on all 3 lines.
    (i know this is late but whatever, at least we know it still works in 2016 after the security patch as well) Also if i wanted to switch back to the Verizon SIM card, can that be done by just swapping it? or will i have to run the CMD again?
