If you have an external hard drive and want another operating system installed and running on it, now you can! I show how you can install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on an external hard drive and boot-up right from the OS. I am demonstrating it on FireWire 800, but this can also work on FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 as well. If you have any concerns or problems, leave a comment below and I will be glad to help! Enjoy! 1. 2 Questions
    1) Say I wanted to install El Capitan onto an external hard drive but my computer had 1GB of RAM. Am I able to get a USB copy of El Capitan, boot into it and then install El Capitan onto the hard drive? If so, how smoothly would it run
    2) Could I disconnect the hard drive from the computer and plug it into another computer?
  2. Thank you so much for posting! So in order to access all my applications and files and stuff, do I need to use migration assistant and transfer everything from the internal to the external? I assume so because this is essentially the same as getting a new computer. I just wasn't sure if there was a way to internally drag my stuff over.
  3. will this work with no hard drive

  9. Hi! I have Snow Leopard on my mac and I want to do a clean install, but I can't access recovery mode. I've tried restarting with command + R, and with Alt, but it doesn't work. I have the installation CD, but my optical drive doesn't work anymore. Is there any other way to restore my mac? Thank you!!

    Thank you!!!
  20. I've been doing this for years.  It has always been a great feature of the Mac system.  You can also clone your existing internal HD to the external so that all of you apps and preferences stay intact.  I primarily use this for booting up externally when I want to run maintenance programs like iDefrag, Disk Warrior, etc...  but it would be a life saver if your internal HD ever fails.  Great Video!
