Disclaimer: Boring Video. UPDATE 8/15/2013. This method will not work for installing onto smaller hard drives. I tried using this method to install from USB windows 8 onto a 240gb ssd drive. It did not work saying that there was a missing partition. As of today, I have not figured out a way to re-install windows 8 onto a different hard drive. It's so complicated!! I am just applying software support instructions to create Recovery Media for my Lenovo Desktop an all in one B540. This method would probably hold true for most Lenovo desktops running on Windows 8. Unfortunately, these pre-built systems no longer include a windows recovery CD/DVD. Instead, most pre-built systems include a recovery partition on their computer. I believe this method is probably similar to windows 7. Still though.... one should definitely create Recovery Media since if your hard drive should ever fail... it will be very difficult to reinstall windows onto a new hard drive without this. What you need is a 16gb flash drive. 1) Insert Flash drive 2) Open Control Panel 3) Go to Recovery 3.1) select Create Recovery Drive 3.2) Click Yes to User Account Control popup 3.3) CheckMark Copy "Recovery Partition" 3.4) Click Next and select the flash drive and click next. 3.5) Let the process complete... if you are using usb 2.0 flash drive.. it will take roughly 1 hr... otherwise.. a usb 3.0 flash drive will be much faster. That's it... if you want to use the flash drive.., just remember to change your bios to boot from the flash drive instead of the hard drive.. How is this useful? Let's say you want to upgrade to a SSD or a larger hard drive. Well... you could clone your hard drive... but still.. I would suggest doing a clean install using the USB Flash recovery media you just created. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024 Although someone in support has stated that there is no Lenovo restore DVD (or system restore dvd) available, it might be able to get one if you talk to enough people at Lenovo.

  1. This method failed for me too. Apparently you have to pay $59.99 for the DVD media required to install windows 8 on the new SSD. I am in the same situation, and understand your frustration. I spent 2 hours on the phone with lenovo, and they started the price at $89.99 for some special support, but then said they could just send me the DVD for $59.99.
