  7. NEVER BUY WD ENCLOSURES. THEY ENCRYPT YOUR INFO IN A WAY THAT YOU NEED THAT ENCLOSURE AND A SPECIAL BRIDGE CHIP TO ACCESS OTHERWISE IN OTHER ENCLOSURES OR DIRECT SATA ECT YOU WILL GET "FORMAT DRIVE" ERROR.
  8. Most WD my book or other enclosures have a custom 'bridge chip' thingy that is a key to see the weird method WD puts data on the drives...so in essence a generic enclosure WILL NOT WORK with WD drives out of their custom enclosures! BEWARE!

  10. Thanks for the Video! It helped me save some time taking my failed WD My Book Home Edition apart. The drive hadn't been recognized for a while on my systems. Loading on my external HD reader worked properly. Seems like the controller for the WD Enclosure had a couple capacitors exploded.

  15. When I connect my external hd using this method, a window pops up asking me to reformat the drive. If I proceed, will this erase my data? How do I get around it?
  16. Hey, I have a WD mybook 1TB and the usb on the enclosure casing got damaged. I tried removing the HDD from the casing and connect it to my computer but nothing is showing up. Can you provide me with any solutions?
  17. Help! I drop my cloud and it is DEAD. Good thing I'm under warranty so I can just sent back and WD will sent me a "new one". I worry about my data inside. How can I delete all data in there before I sent it back to WD? Thanks !
  18. My solution to broken a USB port: had it soldered back on, and used Wondershare Data Recovery software to retrieve my files. WARNING to those with Western Digital external hard drives!! I just learned the hard ways too. On the WD My Book Elite external hard drive I used for my backups, the little micro USB port on it snapped right off the circuit board. I thought, no prob. I cracked open the enclosure, (yes it was already out of warranty) removed the bare hard drive, connected the bare drive to my computer directly via SATA and power cable. And guess what? I could NOT see any data on the drive. OS said the drive was unallocated, as if it had no partition. The Western Digital SATA to USB controller board used on their external hard drives is designed so you can't use the bare hard drive in any other enclosure, or in any computer. I could not find replacement parts or any other solution. Disaster! BEWARE if you use Western Digital external hard drives, you are screwed if the USB port or the enclosure breaks. Google it, this same problem has happen to countless others. I had to have the USB port soldered back on, and then had to use data recovery software to get my data back off that drive.
  19. wow way too much rambling on which was boring also I wouldn't recommend taking an hard drive apart like U where saying as if you expose the metal inside to dust or you get your finger prints on the disc your hard drive will be ruing and data will be lost forever
  20. Hey I have a WD external hard drive I bought in 2010 and it stopped turning on years ago. It's very similar to the one you have but is not black. I honestly can't remember the model but im pretty sure is a mybook model to. Will ill be able to retrieve the information following your tips?
