Are expensive NAS units your only option to expand your storage reliably? I think not... TunnelBear message: TunnelBear is the easy-to-use VPN app for mobile and desktop. Is it just me or is that broken clock in the background driving you crazy too?
-
Activate windows
-
yes but which components did you go with for your cheap server?
-
why does the clock in the video not work?

#FreeNAS for the win

Buy two hdds and copy your important files to both of them. Then burn your super important files onto 3 blue rays. Store one in a cool dry place, store one in your mom's house, and keep the other near your computer.

thanks because I practically need a Nasa supercomputer to keep up with my save games
-
or maybe i have my own data base of tv shows and movies. 10TB and counting

So what if your wife is on you about computer gear or clutter? An off-the-shelf solution for a few time machine backups is one of those things that still does have a place, even for part time geeks. What would you recommend for a situation like THAT, huh?

Just use GSuite for Business. I pay about $8 a month for unlimited storage and i put really EVERYTHING on it... And for that money i don't have to worry about power, HDD failure, slow system, etc. I use Expandrive with it, to easy access all the files and save them easily!

I don't need DIY NAS, I need is best price performance NAS with best remote access on android or ios ( specially photos and videos ) and has best download manager.
WD,QNAP,SYNOLOGY ? -
YOu could also buy a Dell R510 with 8 sata/sas drive bays and throw in your hard drives and run Freenas :)

I understood nothing.

Hey Linus, here is a really nice inexpensive HBA that I recommend. It has two SFF-8087 connectors, and it can support up to 8 drives. I think this would be a good HBA for a home NAS.
SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8
You can find it on Newegg.
Supermicro also makes motherboards and stuff. You should check them out if you want to build another server or something like that. -
+LinusTechTips I really love hearing you talk about server hardware. I'm working on getting my own file server up, so I find hearing your experiences very interesting.

I was thinking to get a 2 or 4 bay off the shelf nas. But if I can grab a pc good enough to use for the same purposes for cheaper, I'd rather do that I guess. I need to backup 4 years of RAW files, and my new camera's RAW's are 3 times larger than my old ones :( I need some storage quick time, what's the easiest way to backup files and make sure even if 1 disk fails files won't get lost?

recommends a i3 instead of a low power xeon
reccomends a desktop THEN reccomends a server case instead of just reccomending a server straight up
WHAT
A DELL C2100 WOULD DO THE JOB JUST FINE AT 200 DOLLARS
WHAT WHAT WHAT WAHT WAHT FHO
