A short video tutorial showing how to set up RAID 5 (with 3 hard disks) on a FreeNAS server.

  1. You build a virtual Freenas box so do you recommend us to run it as a virtual machine or is it better to build a dedicated box for for freenas. I am still not sure if I should go with an old server like HP z400, lenovo s20,...type machines or should I just get a much more powerful server and run a bunch of virtual machines on it with freenas included.
  2. Please help me! What version of the free Nas in this video? i downloaded freenas ver 8.0.3 but the user interface dont look like this.

    (sorry about my english!)
  3. Freenas in VM much better in all aspects. It's Freenas on steroid.
  4. thanks for this video.............
  5. its predicting 42 hours to build my raid 5 array. 3x2 tb drives dual core atom with 2 gb of ram.
  6. I *think* you could get that working if you use a mixture of LVM and software RAID, but it sounds like a lot of hassle when you could just throw the 250GB drives in RAID 5.
  7. I thought for RAID 1 you had to have double the drives, don't think you can use a partition instead. So you'd need 8 x 250GB as far as I know. Why don't you use RAID 5? You only need 5 x 250GB HDDs and your useable storage is 4 x 250GB, if one drive fails then you can restore it with the others.
  8. Thanks for the great video. I was just about install Debian on my server but after seeing the FreeNAS webGUI I think I might try it since I think it might be more user friendly for me. The menus I think will help me keep track of everything.
  9. How do you import a RAID5 array into a newer version of FN 0.7.xx. without doing the final format? I was using a thumb drive for my OS and it recently became corrupt and I cannot recover (or at least I do not know how to) my config. So on a separate thumb drive I installed 0.7.2.6567. Can I recover the existing RAID5 withing blowing my data?
  10. @J2897Tutorials what kind of file transfer speeds did you get off of the pentium 3 nas? was it anywhere close to 30Mbps?
  11. @learnfreenas : Yes, it's possible to add new hard drive to existing array .. LOL .. you just like a frog in the bottom of the well so you think the sky is small .. The trick is you have to use the same size HD get it ready by going through all the add, format and then unmount the array and use the linux command to insert the new drive into the array. After that then remount the array.
  12. Let's say one of the disks in the RAID5 array fails. How is one made aware of this failure?
  13. Hi there, I'm planning to set up a freenas System with a HP ProLiant N36L and four 2GB harddrives in Raid5 or RaidZ1 mode. I'm kind of newish with these things and I'd really like to know how I recognize when one of the discs fails and how I determine wich disc I have to replace. The next question is the decision between Raid5 and RaidZ1 - any recommendations? thx
  14. i've a problem im running the latest freenas, im also trying 2 get a raid5 with 3disks 250GB each , but it doesnt do anything ? just says rebuilding,.. but at info tab there is nothing shown
  15. Is there a way I can set this up so that I can add HDD's later on when I purchase them? I want to build a 12TB NAS, but I on;y want to purchase 2 2TB a month at the moment. I was wondering whether I can over a period of time expand the size as of when I need? Or once, I set it up I can't add addtional drives? Will they be also recognised as 1 drive connected up in Windows?
  16. @learnfreenas thanks! its working now, only it took 220 minutes to build the raid (rebuilding) 4 disk of 1,5tb:-) very nice and clear guide grtz

  18. Hi, can some1 tell if i need a raid controller or is this software enough? Thanks
  19. just replace the defective drive
  20. I did this some month ago and now one of the disks seems to have failed. How do you restore the raid with a new disk without the data to be lost?
