  1. Is it posible to do a backup of a shared folder to a non shared folder on the same synology box?
  2. good video, however regarding OpenVpn i would like to know whether the portforwarding also needs to be enabled at the destination NAS (offsite). thanks and it would be great if you cold maybe do a OpenVpn video :)
  3. As Lon said it is a sponsored video and so he has to say good things however as an owner of 5 Synology boxes and having had them for 6 years I think I need to give a major word of CAUTION regarding their back up solutions.

It is easily the weakest link of the product.

Do a search in the Synology forums and you will discover massively long threads by frustrated people who cannot back up. Synology ignores these forums but they need to pay attention.

DSM 5 back ups worked reasonably reliably and fairly speedily. I was backing up many terrabytes of data doing incremental backups between 4 different synology boxes. My backups were file copying, which means if there was a hardware failure I could simply use the back up box as my server while restoring or replacing the failed hardware and doing a file restore from the backup.

Then DSM 6 came along and forced everyone to use their new backup format....which was NOT file by file but one big file in their own format. This means if your one box goes down you are stuck until you obtain a software explorer to then go through and try to find the files you are working on. I opened a ticket to complain and they restored rsync, so you can see the files as actual files on the back up boxes once again.

HOWEVER, irregardless of whether you use their new DSM 6 format, or plain old rsync, file transfer speeds STINK. The forums are FULL of MANY people struggling with this issue. Transfer speeds are now commonly in the 2-4MBps on a Gbit network. For some people they have calculated that restores could take them half a year if the worst happens. Back up jobs on directories with ZERO changes in files can take 90 minutes before giving the "Backup completed" email confirmation.

These are NOT network issues. On the MAC I use carbon copy cloner to copy from the shared folder on one Synology to the shared folder on another with speeds 7-9 times FASTER. You read that correct. It is 7-9 times faster going through a third machine than for a synology box to go directly to another synology box.

Also backups that once worked for many weeks with no issue can spontaneously FAIL for no reason. This happened to me today, hence finally pushing me to where this review needs to be written. One day they work...maybe for many weeks, and then they just start failing.

I LOVE my boxes. They are quiet, use minimal electricity and have a great set of software apps, BUT backups which are crucial, is a major weak link. Synology should talk to a real back up company and licence some decent software, or allow third party back up solutions more easily installed on the boxes. If I was not able to cobble together my own backups through my computer I would be looking at another NAS solution.
  4. Nice tutorial. it seems to me that you tutorial only works for synology in your own network. Is my understanding correct?
  5. it this method suitable for disaster recovery? i.e. complete loss of server1?
  6. Lon, Excellent video!! Thank you. I agree with you regarding Synology, they make a great product and easy enough for none IT people.. We have one in our office and two at remote locations. Was thinking about buying another small one for the office and put it on our network. Your comment stating the same thing just stepped up my time line. Keep up the great work.
  7. Nice work on this Video ! It helped me see clearly how to seed the backup locally and then move offsite. Thank You for that! One note about restoring. Using the Desktop version of HyperBackup Explorer (on Windows) we can copy any Folder from root on down. Backup Explorer Web based does not permit this. Hope someone might find this tidbit of use.
  8. Hi There
i was just wondering if its possible to have one NAS with a large amount of storage that i can use to backup all my different clients Synology NAS that are out there.
is it possible to do a local USB backup on the clients site then use that as a seed drive to do an initial data transfer to my nas then contune with incremental backups across the internet ?
  9. Just a question.
    SCENARIO:
    Synology DS216j at my place
    Synology DS215j at friend's place

We have a portion of the drive dedicated to each one backup . So I can backup most important data to his Synology and viceversa.

    My question is.
If I set up a VPN from my place to my friend's, using VPN connection of the NAS to his router , is my NAS still reachable over the internet for other services (i.e. Webcam, ftp, etc)??

    Hope I've clearly explained
  10. Great work Lon! You are my favorite youtuber on NAS. Sorry I didn't subscribe earlier.
  11. Can you explain what you mean by Have OpenVPN handling the transaction. Would you just enter in your OpenVPN Creds under target?
  12. Great video. I am using 2 factor authentication via google authenticator to access my remote synology NAS. Will Hyperbackup be able to access the remote NAS if two factor authentication is enabled? Thank you
  13. Really helpful. One question though. Can I use this to back up to a non Synology server and if not what should I use? Cheers
  14. Thank you for the tutorial
  15. Hi Lon, i think you have missed a very cool feature here! In stead of hauling the destination NAS next to the source you want to hyper backup, there is a build in system which allows you to (temporarily) use an external harddrive for the initial backup, then reset the connection via internet and use the net for incremental backups. Add a new Nas s, backup, then tick the lowest of the 3 option (local share/USB) and make the first backup. Then drive down the to the offsite nas and copy the files from the USB DISK. When back (or via internet) pickup the backup you made and edit it to the new location (IP) and folder. This will save you some hustle with ip ranges which might differ from home network to homenetwork... Great video though!
  16. HI ! I'm trying to backup a Synology NAS client
to another NAS as server. I try to connect using the HyperBackup wizard, the wizard shows the server's name and adress normally and let me enter user name and password but when and I click the Shared Folder dropdown, I get all the shared folders of the client NAS, and not as in your video the shared folders of the server.Have an idea of what is going wrong ? Thank you for your help.
  17. Thank you for this video!

I just got a Diskstation DS216 II+2 and was lost on which backup application to use. There seems to be some overlap between their options, though. For cloud backups to Google, I had thought "Cloud Sync" was the way to go, but now it looks like Hyper Backup to Google might be a better setup on an detrimental schedule. What do you think?
  18. Much appreciate this video Lon! Would love to have you go from A to Z on setting up the whole Mail Plus/Server. How to setup it up, what are the prerequisites, etc. Thank you sir!
  19. Nice video (Y)
