  1. I finally got my old HD to boot in a external drive, can anyone link me a anything for taking ownership in Win10? I can't find anything with the same options yet
  2. thank u. BTW i can hook up my data enclosure on desktop monitor ryt?
  3. I bot my insignia hard drive enclosure at best buy for less than 20-30 bucks!! It saved my ass when my laptop burned out!!
  4. what if my laptop has dual hard drives? it seems like those types of enclosures shoot up to more than $100
  5. I've only had one HD enclosure let out the magic smoke but the actual HD inside was OK.

I've found the most reliable HD enclosures are the ORICO USB3 SATA ones.
They're tool free and you can swap out drives in less than a minute. I use three of them for backups. They have external PSUs so heat build-up in them is minimal, although one has a 7200 RPM drive inside and it gets a bit warm if I'm writing a lot of data to it.

Obviously if you're going to recover data it may be a good idea to get a couple of IDE enclosures for legacy hard drives while they're still easily available, one for desktop and one for laptop drives.
  6. So I'm using a MacBook Pro running with El Capitan and connected an old hp pavilion hard drive running under Windows XP AND IM WONDERING why I can't find my media in it. Like its reading it and I see a lot of stuff but a lot of files just show like terminal commands boxes. What do I do?
  7. Hey can you recommend me a hard rive enclose for a WD my book green? And for a MacBook Pro 2010
  8. When I click on users and my username from my other computer that crashed, it says permission denied? Any ideas?
  9. So I connected my enclosure to a computer but it's asking me to format it which of course is counter productive to the whole recovery effort. Any suggestions?
  10. Eli can you link the class for Windows permissions I can't go in the data. I'm trying to recover my files from a dead motherboard laptop... thanks!
  11. Thanks. This was awesome.
  12. Hi, thank you for the useful video, but what about the external hard drive like transcend? Is it SATA or IDE? thank you very much.
  13. Thanks for this video. It was very helpful. Where is your video about permissions?
  14. Thanks Eli....
  15. I just took my Seagate Slim 2 TB external case off to have a look. Am really annoyed at the cheap assembly. USB adapter was only taped onto the contacts with foil tape. It had become loose to the point of not powering up the hd at all. I have a sata cable setup for recovery, so I took off the adapter to expose the sata connector and have it working without a case, but will order an external enclosure from newegg. I had already decided this would work, but think you did an outstanding job of explaining this situation. Thanks!
  16. Sorry if i sound like a noob, but there is only a recovery folder on the hard drive, and i can go no further, are there any suggestions? +Eli the Computer Guy
  17. This guy answered every question I had. And then some... Subbed. Thanks for the knowledge.
  18. Thanks for the info. I have a 10 yr old hp w/ windows xp. Will I be able to recover data w/ a hard drive enclosure and my desktop w/ windows 10?
  19. Demo makes perfect sense. My question is: I have no readily available Win PC (drive came from Win XP Multimedia Edition OS). You say to plug it into a like PC to recover files, but would a Chromebook (official ChromeOS) 'see' the drive and be able to move files tomthe cloud? I'm mainly concerned about pictures and MS Office files which could open in Google apps. Thoughts? Thanks!
