IMPORTANT: FreeNAS as discussed in this video is now known as NAS4Free. This video does NOT apply to what is now called FreeNAS as developed by ixSystems. Here's part one of my creating a software RAID volume on the Video NAS that I am setting up. As the official FreeNAS instructions are rather outdated (for version 0.69), I decided to make this a somewhat instructional video. Hopefully you will find it helpful. Leave a comment if you have questions. Now for the part where I see just how many people do as they should and expand the descriptions to read them, with a typical bad pun: "Want to RAID on your own NAS?" (Before you start giving me those kind of weird looks, the explanation can be found here: http://www.pmaco.com/humor/Internation_Signs.html - it's a riff on the "Advertisement for donkey rides in Thailand" sign.)

  1. thanks man!
  2. Maxtor may be more honest, but I guess you have to be when you fail as much as they do.
  3. my experience is also the same as seanieb64.. of all the drives ive had problems with in the last 5 years 90% have been seagate.. im pretty much done with ever buying seagate products.. meanwhile my Western digital drives are all still working fine.
  4. Hello! I am running V7 of Freenas but have manged to un-mount my Raid:1 drives (2x500gb) by carrying out a factory reset. Is it possible to remount without loosing data on the drives?!
  5. Hey Bill, Thanks for the nice step-by-step intro to Raid-1 installation. Can I turn a non-Raid disk that holds already data to use soft-raid without losing the data (without the need to format)? thanks, --- Moshe
  6. hello, i would like to upgrade hardware from my old freenas PC, how can i do to it without touching my raid 1 disks, In resume leaving as it is but with faster hardware. thanks
  7. I see that you have chosen to run the 'full' version instead of the 'embedded' on your CF card. Is it possible that 'full' might wear out the boot card faster than 'embedded'? I'm asking this because not all CF cards are capable to do "wear levelling" which worries me.
  8. Hey Bill I have a question, I have an iMac with an internal Western Digital drive. How can I test it's S.M.A.R.T data?
  9. @uxwbill Yea. I think I just had the wrong hardware. But I just plan on doing is geting one of the windows home servers from hp. I like working with servers but for home file sharing its fine
  10. I could not get free nas to work for me. I rahter windows home server XD
  11. I heard that using Advanced Format (4k) instead of 512b is recommended for large HD due to its efficiency. FreeNAS is definitely recommended (or any type of RAID based NAS) if one has a large growing data. I wouldn't keep adding USB hd. Instead, having a centralized data storage for everything... is just awesome.
  12. @uxwbill that true but FAT32 has a limit. It would not work with 2TB drives
  13. Wow Bill, i can now set up my own system, following your step by step instructions. Very well thought out. Thanx!!! You are an excelent teacher.
  14. heh.. this looks easier than what i did on linux
