This drive works with Windows XP if you connect it using the USB cable, but if you open the case and try using it as an internal drive it won't work. Also if you transfer files with the USB cable and then try to use the drive as an internal your partition will not be seen with an operating system such as Windows 7 so you will have to reformat the drive and your files will be lost. If you use it as USB always, you are good to go. (for geeks): if the internal USB board that connects the drive to the USB arrange men fails, then you will need special software to recover the files or another board to replace the broken one. From the 2 drives I bought from Best Buy, the internal hard dives where different; they where both green WD drives, but they where different models and the case were different.

  1. really nice video and info given here!
do you have any clue which is the "special software to recover the files" that I can use since my USB controller board failed and I have to connect the disk as internal?
  2. I tried turning it off for a a few seconds and no effect. I get to the point of pulling the case off, but thought I'd give it another try and sure enough, it's back up again. Well there goes my faith in this as a backup device. The irony being it was a free replacement for my original 2tb version that died before it!
  3. Helpful vid. I hot-unplugged my 3tb version after dismounting, to transfer some data to another PC and it died. (USB, is it supposed to be plugnplay or not? No-one seems to know). So as the warranty is up (just, typically!), I was about to rip it apart suspecting the controller had died but the drive was still spinning up. I knew it was a 3.5in inside. WD make great HDDs, but their controllers suck!
  4. Dell sucks LEARN TO BUILD your own
  5. 3.0TBs for 99 bucks! cheap who cares? cheap for the price of space! !! storage !! oh yeah
  6. is the hard drive used inside a 7200 rpm drive?
  7. Im considering getting one to slot into my tower, so my questions are: How easy is it to remove from its casing? (I have also done this with a Simple Save from HP) Does it work fine internally?
  8. Ok, thanks for letting me know about it
  9. The 2 I opened where WD, but not the same model.
  10. Just confirming that all WD my book essential 3tb drives come with WD drives, not external brands like hitachi etc? I ask because I read that their mybook 4tb drives come with hitachi drives
