RAID 5 is not a good choice for redundancy these days, and likely won't protect you against a disk failure. Here's why you should instead use RAID 6 in your NAS or RAID array! ▼ Join the conversation! ▼ Twitter ▻ https://twitter.com/ThioJoe Facebook ▻ http://www.facebook.com/ThioJoeTV Instagram ▻ http://instagram.com/ThioJoe Website ▻ http://www.thiojoe.com ▼ More Videos ▼ How Long do Hard Drives Last?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSOKKaRtRO4&index=22&list=PLltNHnxunnSw4q2XHzZTMa7jKRM1dVhpF How Are Old Movies in 1080p?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8hMMqSFsG8&index=11&list=PLltNHnxunnSw4q2XHzZTMa7jKRM1dVhpF ▬▬▬▬My Channels▬▬▬▬ Comedy ▻ http://youtube.com/ThioJoe Gaming ▻ http://youtube.com/CacheGaming Extra ▻ http://youtube.com/channel/UCmxp6LjQ5LHssP4iO17mm6Q Get cool merchandise: https://thiojoe.spreadshirt.com/ Support me on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/thiojoe ---------------------------------------------------------

  1. This is DUMB!!! There is nothing wrong with RAID5. Raid 6 just wastes 1 more HDD. Can you imagine a 4 bay NAS and only 2 HDD's is storage and the other to are just a backup for RAID6. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.

Turn on Bit Rot protection!!! Because a NAS is not a backup, you should be backing up your NAS to some type of external HDD(s) or another NAS. Because all kinds of things can go wrong. I back up to external HDD and then put those into my fire proof safe. I'll lose some data, but nothing really important. Anything that is, it backed up into the cloud by Carbonite. Pictures and text files and whatnot.

So you use RAID 6. What happens if if you're house burns down? Ops, lost all your Data. What happens if your NAS breaks by any number of reasons? What happens if you're robbed? Lost your Data!!!. If someone robs my house and takes my NAS. It would suck, but I have a backup in a locked, fire resistant safe, that's bolted down. So I can buy another NAS and restore most of my files.

Unless you starting getting into a 8 Bay NAS or larger, then maybe RAID 6 would be OK. What I like to do is not buy all my NAS drives all at once or from the same place. Where you may get a batch a bad HDD's. I'll also only add another HDD as I'm close to filling up the NAS and need more space soon. Then I can pop in another drive, which means it's newer and has no where and tear on it from being used. I have WD drives that are 2-4 years old or older and a couple newer Seagate NAS drives. The odd's of a second HDD failing during the rebuild process of the new drive is pretty SLIM. But if it did happen, that's why you have a real BACKUP. Having a NAS is NOT a backup.
  2. I agree with the choice of using RAID6 over RAID5 for all of the reasons that you mentioned.. One thing I feel you may have missed is that when a drive fails, the other drives take on more work especially during a rebuild process. This strongly supports your decision to recommend RAID6.
  3. But why does it not re buil it
  4. what would happen if parity drive dies
  5. Thanx it Really helped alot
  6. why not just use RAID 10 instead of RAID 6.
  7. recite by heart just theoretical
  8. if you that worried about your data then just use raid 10
  9. those diagrams were super useful! i had no idea how parity stripes worked even after reading extensively until i had a bit of a look at those pictures.
  10. i use raid 0 for my bootup drives ... its fast as f... :) my fav raid is SHR its about like raid 5 in some ways but .. alot better
  11. Thanks for the explaining but I use RAID 5 and RAID 0 on an OLD NAS as a backup so the chance that both RAID 5 and the OLD NAS will fail are a risk I am willing to take.
  12. @GifCO

You all done and all set now?
  13. RAID 1 does not give you increased read speed. RAID 1 is strictly mirrored. Only benefit is if you lose 1 drive you're not screwed. Lose both at the same time and yeah (which I have had happen).

RAID 5 is still valid. Use RAID 5 with a hot spare (if supported) if you are that nervous. Also, this is why you backup everything.

RAID 6 is not cost effective. Also, not a lot of consumer boards use RAID 6 (Unless you want to spend some money).
95% of your consumer boards will use RAID 0/1/5/10 and 99% of the time it is software RAID.

This applies to HDDs and SSDs.
  14. You are an idiot. You dont need to use RAID 6 (its actually a terrible idea without a dedicated RAID card) espeically when talking about 7 drives as why not go with 8 and use RAID 10.
What a bunch of regurgitated BS, I can guarantee you have never even built a RAID array in your life
  15. the fact that this has so many up-votes is disturbing. are there really that many idiots out there who believe this shit? here is a better suggestion. use drives that are appropriate for the application, back up the important stuff onto a different device, and get a high quality UPS.

i've worked IT in 3 different multi BILLION dollar, multinational companies in a span of 15 years. no one ever bothered using RAID 6. and during the two times i've witnessed catastrophic data losses, it was never because there was a multiple drive failures in a single array. the first one was due to a fire, the second due to hurricane sandy. RAID 6 would not have helped anyone in those situations.

so once again, BACK YOUR SHIT UP! sticking more drives in your NAS is not going to help you if a power loss corrupts your volume, or if a fire or flood destroys your equipment.
  16. Leo Warren, what SSD's do you use that die??
  17. i do raid 10
  18. if you make NAT for daily base usage raid5 is ok.if you you need backup files for safe for years raid 5 is ok too becouse you not USE that NAT everyday. that is the point its BACKUP! basically you need atleast 2x more than you want use. that is cost of backup. if your files are just movies music and tv series. who cares if you loose them. just download again LOL
who is thinking NAT is secure way backup that you can read and write everyday for streaming movies for living room? what is wrong with you people. backup is used only for writing files on them and read when you need. means after you unluck and have 2 drives error on raid 5 that you using everyday for 5 years lol and that was your NAT backup. seriously lol
  19. pcie nvme drives are most of the times cheaper and faster than ssds in raid0, so...
  20. Mate, you should buy some zit cream and get outside to find a woman willing to touch your gut-stick.... then you wouldn't be so anal about two drives failing at once.
