Yahoo revealed Thursday that it was hacked and that 500 million accounts may have been affected. In this satirical video, we imagine what a Yahoo employee might say in response to the security breach. The breach, first reported by Re/Code, was later confirmed by Yahoo's Chief Information Security Officer Bob Lord. "We have confirmed that a copy of certain user account information was stolen from the company's network in late 2014 by what it believes is a state-sponsored actor," Lord said. The stolen information includes names, email addresses telephone numbers, dates of birth, protected passwords and encrypted and unencrypted security questions and answers. The investigation does not show unprotected passwords, bank information or credit card numbers were stolen, the company said. The breach – which could be the largest cybercrime ever reported – occurred in late 2014. The hacker is not currently in the company system, Yahoo said. Earlier reports said the hack was perpetrated by someone who goes by the name "Peace." The same person is linked to previous hacks of LinkedIn and MySpace. What should Yahoo users do now? Here's what Yahoo recommends: Change your Yahoo account password, especially if you haven't done so since 2014. Change your password and security questions and answers for any other accounts on which you used the same or similar information as your Yahoo account. Review bank statements and accounts for suspicious activity. Be cautious of any unsolicited communications that ask for your personal information or refer you to a web page asking for personal information. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails. Consider using Yahoo Account Key, an authentication tool that eliminates the need for passwords. For its part, Yahoo said it is beefing up security to detect and prevent unauthorized access to account. It is in the process of notifying affected users.
